Nielsen Expects $103M Impact On Spanish Economy If La Roja Wins 2014 World Cup

A study by Nielsen showed that if Spain, the defending World Cup champion, wins the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, it will increase spending in Spain's economy by €75M ($103M), according to the EP. Nielsen's study "predicts that Spain winning, as it did in '10, will have an economic impact similar to that of La Roja's recent championships." Another "championship would spur an increase in spending on alcoholic beverages, refreshments, snacks, dried fruit, meats, cheeses and candy." Nielsen Spain & Portugal Dir General Gustavo Núñez said, "Celebrating a World Cup championship is a unique opportunity, as these events unite citizens with family members and friends, generating moments of special spending that could influence a recuperation of the economy." Nielsen's figures show a 3% annual increase in categories related to social celebrations, with an 8% increase during the weeks when Spain won Euro 2008 and Euro 2012, as well as the 2010 World Cup (EP, 12/9).
