Event Notes: West Indies U19 Cricket Refuses To Play In Bangladesh, Cites Security

Citing "security concerns," the West Indies U19 cricket team on Sunday "declined to play" Bangladesh U19 in Chittagong, which is "242 km southeast of capital Dhaka." The West Indies team "expressed their reluctance after a bomb blast Saturday night in front of their hotel" in Chittagong, where the "West Indies team has been residing." Bangladesh "has been rocked by homemade bomb attacks in recent weeks" (IANS, 12/8). ... The Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore was a "mess-up unlike anything anyone has seen" in the event's history. Top runners were "wrongly denied podium finishes only to be reinstated two days later." Then it was discovered that a "timing glitch caused 3,782 runners to be either unfairly disqualified or given inaccurate timings" (STRAITS TIMES, 12/8). ... The first two editions of the Thailand Golf Championship at Amata Spring Country Club in Chon Buri were a "success and the course will again host the tournament this year" from Dec. 12-15. Apart from Sweden's Stenson, the "first player to win the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup and the European Tour's Race to Dubai in the same year, other participants include four major champions:" defending TGC champion Charl Schwartzel (2011 Masters), Justin Rose (2013 US Open), Bubba Watson (2012 Masters) and John Daly (1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open). Also "in the 128-player field at the Asian Tour event will be Rickie Fowler, Ryo Ishikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, Sergio Garcia and Hunter Mahan" (BANGKOK POST, 12/8).
