Barcelona Website Receives Certification For Facilitating Access For Handicapped

FC Barcelona's website has been optimized to obtain AA certification for website accessibility from the World Wide Web Consortium via the ONCE Foundation's (Spanish Association for the Blind) Technosite company. Barcelona is now the first sports club in the world to gain this certificate. The certification is regularly checked and is valid for two years. Barcelona's site is adapted to all languages used on any type of device, including mobiles, computers of tablets. Barcelona Member Services Dir Pilar Guinovart said that 4,051 FCB club members have some kind of disability. Barcelona New Technologies Dir Didac Lee said, "Making the website accessible means making the website accessible to everyone. Two barriers have been broken: the technological barrier and the accessibility barrier for people with disabilities." Fans with impaired vision will be able to use screen readers to read the website aloud. Those with hearing difficulties will be able to consult a selection of videos with sign language while people with a physical disability will be able to surf the website using the keyboard if they cannot use the mouse (Barcelona). In Barcelona, Francesc Perearnau reported the project has cost €100,000 ($135,800) and will require an annual maintenance cost of €25,000 ($34,000) (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 12/3).
