Event Notes: Lack Of Stars Forces Organizers To Cut OneAsia Championship

Organizers said that the inaugural OneAsia Championship "has been axed from this year's tour schedule after failing to attract enough star golfers." The $2.1M tournament scheduled for southern China's Mission Hills this week "was intended to be the climax of the stroke-play events on the OneAsia calendar." It is one of a number of Asian tournaments "to be hit in what OneAsia called a 'year of consolidation,' which follows a long period of expansion" (THE AGE, 12/3). ... Spanish broadcaster TV3's "La Marató," a fundraising event for neurodegenerative diseases, will be held on Dec. 15. Part of the event is the "Famous vs. Famous" football game, and Barcelona "will let the game be played at the club's Mini Estadi, where Barcelona's reserve team plays its home games." The match will "attract professionals from sports, TV, film and other sectors" and tickets will be free (SPORT, 12/2). ...The European Handball Federation announced that Berlin's Max-Schmeling-Halle will host the final phase of the EHF Cup on May 17-18. The venue has a capacity of 9,000 and is the home arena for Füchse Berlin. Other bids to host came from Meshkov Brest, London GD, AEK Athens, Montpellier Agglomeration HB, the Luxembourgish Handball Federation and in.Stuttgart (European Handball Federation). ... Race of Champions organizers said on Monday that they have canceled the motorsport event in Bangkok as "continuing skirmishes between police and anti-government protesters raise security fears." The competition was "due to be held" on Dec. 14-15 at a "suburban stadium in the capital, where tens of thousands of pro-government 'Red Shirt' supporters gathered for a rally last weekend" (AFP, 12/2).
