This Year's Melbourne Cup Winner A Tough Pick As Wagering Down 2%

Picking the winner of the Melbourne Cup "apparently appeared a bit too hard for some punters as betting on Australia's greatest horse race dropped this year," according to THE AUSTRALIAN. Melbourne Cup turnover across Australia tallied about A$148M ($140M). In New South Wales and Victoria, betting agency Tabcorp "raked in" A$90.6M as customers "made the agonising decision on which horse to back from one of the strongest fields in the race's rich history." That "was down" 2% on '12. A total of A$133.7M "was handed over in the two states on the 10-race card at Flemington," down 4.8% on last year (THE AUSTRALIAN, 11/6).
