Barcelona Pays For Town Council To Extend Metro Hours Following Late Supercopa Match

The Barcelona city council and FC Barcelona have "reached an agreement to guarantee that there will be metro service" after the Supercopa of Spain match against Atlético Madrid at Camp Nou stadium on Aug. 28, which starts at 11pm local time. Barcelona will pay €30,000 ($40,041) for the cost of extending the metro schedule, "with the last suburban train leaving at 1am the next morning -- the game will end around 12:45am -- and in case the game has overtime, the club will 'asborb' the transportation demand." Barcelona Mayor Xavier Trias had asked the game change its starting time and claimed that the city council "would not pay the cost of extending the metro's hours under any circumstances." After reaching the agreement with Barcelona, Trias "thanked the club for its 'sensibility and willingness' to find a solution" (EP, 8/19).
