Low Attendance At Men's Open Championship, Women's British Open Cost Golf $3.3M

Golf "is reeling" from a £2.25M ($3.3M) cash blow after "thousands of fans boycotted Muirfield and St. Andrews in a protest at a hike in ticket prices," according to Dale Rankin of the Scotland DAILY RECORD. Close to 50,000 "stayed away" from The Open and the Ricoh Women’s British Open "after being asked to fork out up to" £75 ($115) per day "to watch the world’s top stars in action." Around 20,000 fewer fans watched The Open at Muirfield compared to the last time the event was staged at the East Lothian course in '02. And "half as many paying punters attended the women’s equivalent" compared to its last Old Course staging in '07 (DAILY RECORD, 8/6).
