COE President Representing Madrid 2020 At FINA World Championships In Barcelona
Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) President Alejandro Blanco "is fighting to speak with IOC members in Barcelona" for the Int'l Swimming Federation's (FINA) World Championships, according to Matilla & Jiménez of AS. As of Sunday, four members of the IOC had visited this year's World Championships, with Blanco contacting them following the event's inauguration on Friday. Blanco has met with FINA President Julio César Maglione of Uruguay, former Russian swimmer Alexander Popov, Zimbabwe swimmer Kirsty Coventry and Sam Ramsamy of South Africa. Blanco will make several trips from Madrid to Barcelona for different promotions, but "his obsession is to explain the Madrid 2020 Olympic bid to the IOC members thoroughly." It is expected that "throughout the tournament, which runs through Aug. 4, eight other IOC members will be present at some point." Blanco's other point of interest while in Barcelona is to convince Lionel Messi to participate in a promotional video for Madrid 2020 (AS, 7/21).
