Liga MX Side Atlas Turns Down Offer Of $960K From Jalisco State Governor

Due to the "huge controversy that it generated, politically as much as socially," Liga MX side Atlas has declined the 12M pesos ($960,000) it had been offered by Mexican state Jalisco Governor Jorge Aristóteles Sandoval after Atlas's petition for government support, according to Rigoberto Juárez of LA AFICION. Atlas President Eugenio Ruiz Orozco said, "It is very clear to us that public resources are not meant to attend to private problems. Atlas is not a private institution, it is a social service institution and that is why we are surprised by the media attention given to our request. We appreciate the governor's time but we have made the decision as a social organization to withdraw the request for support that we made to the government" (LA AFICION, 7/16).
