Event Notes: Mexico Hosting Its First Taekwondo World Championship

The 2013 Taekwondo World Championships kicked off Monday in Puebla, Mexico, marking the first time Mexico has hosted the competition and the second time the event has taken place in Latin America. World Taekwondo Federation President Choue Chungwon thanked the Puebla Organizing Committee for hosting the event (LA AFICION, 7/14). ... Seventeen people were killed in a stadium stampede in eastern Indonesia after spectators "rioted after the defeat of a local boxer." Youth & Sports Minister Roy Suryo said that the victims -- including 11 women -- "were trampled to death as about 1,500 spectators left the overcrowded stadium to escape a riot" (AP, 7/15).
