Wimbledon Fourth Round Matches Net Top Ratings On German Pay-TV Channel Sky, BBC

German pay-TV channel Sky, which has the exclusive broadcast rights for Wimbledon in Germany, "has recorded convincing ratings for its coverage of both fourth round matches with German participation," according to Uwe Mantel of DWDL. The women's fourth round match between Sabine Lisicki and Serena Williams, which started at 2pm German time on Monday, attracted 80,000 viewers. Lisicki's three-set victory had a 0.9% market share. In the target demographic 14-49, the game reached a 0.8% share. Following the women's match, Tommy Haas played world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at 7:20pm. The match attracted 140,000 viewers and had a 0.6% market share. In the target demographic, Djokovic's straight-set victory obtained a 1.1% share (DWDL, 7/2).

MURRAY MANIA: In London, John Plunkett reported "a peak audience of nearly 6 million viewers watched Andy Murray's straight sets win over Mikhail Youzhny" to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Except watching it was not "quite as straightforward as Murray's win." After a five-minute peak of 5.7 million viewers on BBC1 Monday afternoon, tennis fans "had to switch to BBC2 to make way for the news at 6pm." BBC2 "benefitted to the tune of a 4.7 million peak." Overall, BBC1's afternoon coverage from Wimbledon "averaged 3.5 million viewers, a 35.3% share," between 1:45pm and 6pm. BBC2's early evening tennis coverage "had 2.4 million viewers, a 13.1% share," between 5:50pm and 8pm (GUARDIAN, 7/2).
