FA Chair David Bernstein Rejects Proposal To Move 2022 Qatar World Cup To Winter

Outgoing FA Chair David Bernstein has "dismissed a proposal to reschedule the 2022 World Cup to better suit the climate in Qatar," according to Ashling O'Connor of the LONDON TIMES. Bernstein said moving the tournament from summer to winter to avoid the searing desert heat would be “fundamentally flawed.” He also "hit back" at the idea of a gradual erosion of football as a winter sport amid suggestions from the int'l corridors of power that the game should be played more in the summer months. The Premier League, like the FA, is opposed to a winter World Cup -- played in either November and December or January and February -- "because of the disruption that it would cause to up to three seasons" (LONDON TIMES, 6/8).
