Glasgow Reveals Bid Plans For 2018 Youth Olympic Games

Glasgow, Scotland revealed plans for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games at the Tollcross venue, attended by Sport Minister Shona Robison and you athletes from the City of Glasgow swim team. The bid document, which has been submitted to the IOC, revealed that athletic events would be held at Scotstoun Stadium while diving and swimming would be staged at Tollcross Int'l Aquatics Centre, which a purpose-built Athletes' Village at Sighthill, north of the city (Glasgow 2018). The Scotland DAILY RECORD wrote the proposals "were unveiled by Glasgow 2018's bid team, which is comprised of the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and the British Olympic Association." A total of 15 out of 17 sites proposed for use in the '18 bid "will be completed before the end of '13 and 85% of those are no more than 20 minutes travel from the Youth Olympic Village." The Tollcross facility, which was built from a £300M ($394M) investment in sports infrastructure, "will host swimming events at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and is the proposed venue for swimming, diving and modern pentathlon fixtures during the YOG in '18 (DAILY RECORD, 12/17). The BBC noted Glasgow's bid is being supported by BOA & former LOCOG Chair Sebastian Coe. Coe said, "The Youth Olympic Games is a fresh, exciting, young product. By entrusting it to Glasgow 2018, the Olympic family will have a historic opportunity to draw on the unprecedented pool of sophisticated event-hosting expertise and global youth engagement programmes in the U.K. right now (BBC, 12/17).
