Spanish Competition Commission Opens Proceedings Against Three Broadcasters
The Spanish Competition Commission (CNC) has "opened legal proceedings" against broadcasters Canal+, Telefónica and Mediapro, according to EL PERIODICO. The CNC began investigating following complaints from other cable operators including: Cableuropa, France Telecom Spain, Euskaltel and Telecable (EL PERIODICO, 12/7). ADVANCED TELEVISON's David Del Valle reported that the CNC accuses Canal+ of "abuse of dominant position" in the re-sale of TV rights to La Liga and the Copa del Rey by setting "unequal conditions" when exploiting the TV rights through Canal+ Liga. The CNC is also "probing restricted practices" in the deal between Canal+ and Telefonica to exploit the TV channels Canal+ Liga and Canal+ Liga de Campeones with conditions that "could unjustifiably exclude third party pay-TV operators." The CNC has 18 months "to take a final decision" (ADVANCED TELEVISION, 12/10).
