Qatar Set To Break Ground On 2022 World Cup Stadium, Five More Expected

A top official said that Qatar will soon begin working on its first new football stadium for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, according to THE PENINSULA. Qatar Olympic Committee Secretary General Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani revealed that the work on the new stadium "is expected to be completed in '15." The new stadium will be built inside Qatar Foundation (Education City). In its bid, Qatar "pledged to build five new stadiums" including an 80,000-seater Lusail Iconic Stadium. Sheikh Saoud said that the country "will upgrade existing football and sports facilities in the coming years." Additionally, he said that four new football clubs will be added to the Qatar Stars League, which currently has 12 teams. (THE PENINSULA, 12/10).
