Scottish Third Division club Elgin City has been hit with a £25,000 ($40,000) fine by the Scottish Football League after the cancellation of Sunday's game against Rangers, "with the Moray club also ordered to pay compensation to the Ibrox side," according to Craig P. Stewart of the SCOTSMAN. Charity will, however, "be a winner with £5,000 ($8,000) of the fine being handed over to a good cause chosen by Rangers." The game was called off for safety reasons "when it was discovered that more than 1,100 extra tickets had been sold" above the agreed capacity of 4,250 (SCOTSMAN, 11/28). In Glasgow, Colin Duncan reported Elgin Chair Graham Tatters Tuesday admitted that "he was happy with the sanctions because he feared a points deduction that would have seriously affected the club's hopes of promotion." Elgin will hold a board meeting Wednesday night "to decide whether to appeal the penalty although that course of action looks unlikely."
Tatters said, "But we know if we appeal and it is not upheld, the club could be hit with further punishment" (DAILY RECORD, 11/28).
