Spanish Government Pressuring Mediapro and Prisa To Work Out Deal Over La Liga TV Rights

The Spanish government "is pressuring" broadcasters Mediapro and Prisa to work out a deal in order to guarantee football on TV, according to Africa Semprun of ELECONOMISTA.es. Secretary of State for Sports Manuel Cardenal was at the meeting Tuesday and according to the Supreme Council of Sports he is trying to find a solution. The Supreme Council of Sports released a statement saying, "Cardenal has regular contacts with the world of sports, especially with the TV operators, and is working in every way possible to find a solution." Sources close to the negotiations said, "There needs to be some common sense in the process. The last thing the government wants now is to have problems with football and the games not be broadcasted." The sources added, "It is very complicated to get a deal between Prisa and Mediapro because the differences are very big, unless politicians achieve miracles" (ELECONOMISTA.es, 8/15).
