Globo And Record Are Fighting For Rights To The 2020 Olympic Games

Brazilian broadcasters Globo and Record "have started the fight" to acquire the '20 Olympic rights, according to IG.com.br. The free-to-air TV rights are estimated to have a cost of more than R$250M ($123.4M). The '16 Rio de Janeiro Games were sold by the IOC to Bandeirantes, Globo and Record for R$200M ($99M). Globo and Record "have started conversing" with the IOC for the rights to the '20 Games. The initial offer "will be in the ball park of" R$250M ($123.4M) for free-to-air rights. The negotiations "are just another chapter in the extensive fight" between Globo and Record for the rights to large sporting events. Back in February, Globo announced the extension of its deal with FIFA for World Cup rights. The new contract gave the Rio de Janeiro-based broadcaster the rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Record has attempted to acquire rights for the UEFA Champions League, Brazilian League and the 2014 World Cup but failed to take them away from Globo (IG.com.br, 8/8).
