Rangers Fans Seek Clarity Over EBT Probe

Fans of Scottish Third Division side Rangers "demanded clarity over a possible conflict of interest" over the SPL’s “dual contracts” investigation Sunday night, according to the Scotland DAILY RECORD. The three main supporters groups released a statement which detailed four main issues "arising from the appointment of a tribunal set up to decide on the Ibrox club’s fate" over alleged financial indiscretions. The Rangers Supporters Assembly, Supporters Trust and Supporters Association have criticized the SPL’s decision to appoint law firm Harper Macleod LLP to oversee the inquiry because the firm "has close links" with Celtic FC and their CEO Peter Lawwell. Rangers fans also claim the case "has been prejudiced by a media frenzy being driven by key SPL figures" and have called for a widespread probe into all clubs who also "may have a case to answer." They are asking why, for example, there is "no inquiry into the way Brazilian star Juninho was paid at Celtic" (DAILY RECORD, 8/6).

MURRAY DENIES CHEATING: Meanwhile, the SCOTSMAN reported that former Rangers owner and Chair David Murray "has denied cheating took place" while he was in charge of Rangers. In a statement, Murray also accused the SPL of attempting to “retrospectively rewrite laws to incorporate items not previously covered.” Murray said: “During my stewardship of Rangers no rules were breached or circumvented, and I reject and resent any suggestion that anything was done which amounted to cheating" (SCOTSMAN, 8/6).
