Hyder Hiring 500 Engineers For Qatar World Cup Projects

Hyder, the 150-year-old design consultancy that built London's Tower Bridge, is set to hire 500 engineers, mostly from the U.K., in preparation for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, according to Gill Plimmer of the FINANCIAL TIMES. U.K. Regional Managing Dir Graham Reid said that Hyder "is hoping to mop up some of the engineering talent that has been shed by other companies, drawing staff from the U.K., Germany and Ireland, to work in Qatar and Saudi Arabia, which are experiencing a construction boom." The FTSE 250 company already has secured an £80M ($124.4M) contract to "design roads and drainage in the north of Doha." Doha is planning on investing as much as $149B on infrastructure and another $126B on housing ahead of the 2022 World Cup. British companies Balfour Beatty, Atkins and Mace "are also joining the competition" to win contracts in the region (FINANCIAL TIMES, 6/25).
