Germany And Portugal Fined By UEFA For Fan Behavior

Germany and Portugal have been fined by UEFA for "the behaviour of Germany fans and a delayed start by Portugal" during their opening Euro 2012 match on Saturday night, according to the PA. The German Football Association was docked €10,000 ($12,596) for "the throwing of missiles" by their supporters during a Group B match in Lviv. German supporters "threw screwed up paper" at Portugal's players during some corner kicks and "let off a smoke bomb" in the stands. The Portuguese Football Association was fined €5,000 ($6,298) for "a delayed kick-off to the second half at the same game" (PA, 6/14).

MORE FANS EXPECTED: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Marcin Sobczyk reported on the Emerging Europe blog that Polish authorities expect 20,000 Russian fans in Warsaw for Saturday's match against Greece at National Stadium. That is "twice as many" as were on hand Tuesday when violence between Russian and Polish fans left about 12 people injured and led to nearly 200 arrests. Authorities said that, unlike on Tuesday, they "haven’t signaled their intention of marching with Russian and Soviet flags through the city." Warsaw courts are "issuing sentences" to the first of the fans charged with taking part in the brawl (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 6/14).

POSSIBLE APPEAL: The London INDEPENDENT's Ben Rumsby reported that the Russian Football Union (RFS) have vowed "to do everything possible to escape the severe punishment" imposed on them over the behavior of their fans. A RFS spokesman told the PA that the union "had yet to decide" whether to appeal the suspended six-point deduction and €120,000 ($151,000) fine for the "violent, offensive and unsafe conduct" of their supporters during Friday's Group A game against Czech Republic (INDEPENDENT, 6/14).
