The Times, The Sunday Times May Remove Paywall For London Olympics

The Times and The Sunday Times websites are "expected to be free to access on some days during the Olympics," after the sites reported around 6,000 new registrations when the paywall was removed during the Jubilee weekend, according to John Reynolds of BRAND REPUBLIC. Sources have suggested that The Times and The Sunday Times "will be free to access for two or three days during the Olympics." However, there is "no suggestion" that News Int'l is looking to permanently bring down the paywall. Those that accessed The Times and The Sunday Times websites on either Saturday or Sunday were required to register an e-mail address before they were granted access. News Int'l "will now contact the 6,000 new registrations and try and encourage them to sign up as paid-for subscribers." The newspaper publisher is "hoping to convert one in six of the new registrations" (BRANDREPUBLIC.com, 6/6).
