Tigers Give Multiyear Extension To GM Avila Amid Full Rebuild

Tigers Chair & CEO Christopher Ilitch on Friday "announced a contract extension" for Exec VP & GM Al Avila, whose original five-year contract "was to expire" in August '20. It is not known "how many years the new deal adds for Avila," whose team is "neck deep in an ugly rebuild" that has produced a 28-56 record so far this season. The Tigers "haven't been to the playoffs in Avila's tenure as GM and have had a winning record as many times as they've had the worst record in baseball (one each)" (DETROIT NEWS, 7/6). Avila said that Ilitch "first approached" him during Spring Training about a "possible extension." Avila said that he "urged Ilitch to hold off until during the season" (DETROIT NEWS, 7/6).
