Fury Defeats Schwarz At MGM In Front Of Lackluster Crowd

Fury came to the ring wearing a stars-and-stripes Uncle Sam outfit, with shorts to matchgetty images

Tyson Fury defeated Tom Schwarz via second round TKO last night in front of 9,102 fans at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, which is about "half the arena's capacity." The upper bowl was "curtained off," so it did not "feel empty" (THEGUARDIAN.com, 6/15). Fury's win over the "terribly overmatched" Schwarz, "didn't prove anything -- regardless of how good Fury looked." There were still "plenty of empty seats" at MGM Grand and it "wasn't a star-turning performance." Following the win, Fury "mentioned another fight on September 21 or October 5, and then a rematch" with Deontay Wilder next year (RINGTV.com, 6/16). Fury was "mindful of his desire to woo the American public," arriving in the ring "wearing a stars-and-stripes Uncle Sam outfit, with shorts to match" (THETIMES.co.uk, 6/16). In addition, James Brown's "Living in America," an ode to Apollo Creed's "fateful ring walk in 'Rocky IV,'" played as Fury entered. Fury even "walked through a sea of showgirls also wearing the colors" of the U.S., "just like Creed" (THEATHLETIC.com, 6/15).
