The WALL STREET JOURNAL goes with the header, "The Win That Changed The Tennis World." Arthur Ashe’s dramatic victory at the first U.S. Open 50 years ago "ushered in a new era for diversity in the game and for the bankability of its stars." Nobody "expected" Ashe to win the first U.S. Open. It was the "first time that players who had turned professional were allowed to compete with amateurs like Ashe" for the U.S. national title -- thus the new “Open” era.
