San Jose To Host NHL All-Star Weekend For Second Time In '19

San Jose will host NHL All-Star Weekend in '19, the "second time the Sharks have hosted the events," which are set for Jan. 25-27. The league announced the '19 host city as part of All-Star festivities in Tampa (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/28). The Sharks last hosted the ASG in '97, when the franchise was in its "sixth season and SAP Center -- then called San Jose Arena -- was just four years old." It "isn't known how many franchises" bid to host next year's game (San Jose MERCURY NEWS, 1/28).

The league also announced that the Oilers and Devils will "open next season" in Stockholm, Sweden, while the Jets and Panthers in November will play two games in Finland, "continuing the NHL's international push." The league next season also will return to China for exhibitions, but the dates and cities have "not been finalized." The teams playing in China are "expected to be" the Flames and Bruins (L.A. TIMES, 1/28).

Meanwhile, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said of a potential esports league, "Our goal is to unveil something before the end of the regular season, which would have a series of competitions using the EA game and we'll have more details when we're ready to launch" (USATODAY.com, 1/27). Bettman over the weekend also affirmed his stance on the non-connection between concussions and CTE: "It's not my position, it's the position of the medical community, and the people -- medical and scientific -- that advise us. I'm not a doctor. I'm not a scientist. I only know what I'm told" (N.Y. POST, 1/28).

The '18 NHL All-Star Game begins at 3:30pm ET in Tampa. Amalie Arena last night hosted the All-Star Skills Competition (THE DAILY).
