Whaley Named PGA Of America Secretary, Is Org.'s First Female Officer

The PGA of America yesterday elected former golfer Suzy Whaley to the position of Secretary, making her the "first female officer" in the organization's history. Whaley received 52.63% of the 114 votes in a "three-way race." She will serve the next two years as Secretary, then two years as VP "before starting a two-year term as president and another two-year term as honorary president." Fans Snap Up Free Tickets For Relocated Jets-Bills Game At Ford Field

The Lions yesterday announced that all available free tickets for tomorrow's relocated Jets-Bills game at Ford Field "had been distributed." The capacity of the stadium is 65,000, but more tickets than that "will be given out in anticipation of no-shows." The Lions are attempting to make the game "as much as a home game as they can for the Bills," who were forced to move the game due to record snowfall rendering Ralph Wilson Stadium unplayable. Fans who originally had tickets for the game in Buffalo and now will be attending in Detroit "will be given preferred seating between the 20-yard lines on the Bills’ side" (BUFFALO NEWS, 11/23).

The Bills "are offering full refunds for fans who held tickets to Sunday's originally scheduled game." Even if fans "receive a refund, they can use those tickets at Ford Field" tomorrow night (ESPN.com, 11/22).

Cornwell Leaving Morgan Stanley To Join Former Boss' PJT Partners

By Daniel Kaplan

Morgan Stanley Managing Dir Don Cornwell, who runs sports investment banking for the firm, is leaving his position to join PJT Partners. He will start there February 18. PJT is a firm started by Cornwell's former boss, Paul Taubman. Cornwell said he will continue to handle sports investment banking there. At Morgan Stanley, Cornwell handled the sales of the Bills, Steelers, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment and IMG. PJT is combining with the advisory business being spun off by Blackstone Group LP.

Cornwell did not offer a reason why he is leaving Morgan Stanley, though on Wall Street it almost is always for a better financial opportunity. Under terms of his separation from Morgan Stanley, he cannot start at PJT until the mid-February date. It is unclear if Morgan Stanley will replace him, though sports usually is not enough of a money maker for large blue-chip Wall Street firms to pour great resources into.

In Expected Move, Judge Rules Against N.J.'s Sports Gambling Bid

U.S. District Court Judge Michael Shipp on Friday night ruled that the state of New Jersey "cannot partially lift a prohibition on sports betting in an effort to boost the state’s struggling horse racing and casino industries." The decision "was the expected outcome, since the judge has ruled similarly in the past." The state, "locked in a legal battle with the NCAA and the four major U.S. professional sports leagues, has already filed a notice of appeal." Shipp "agreed with the sports leagues that setting parameters such as limiting sports gambling to certain places amounts to regulation." While he "agreed with the central part" of the leagues' position, he "dismissed some of their other arguments" (AP, 11/21).

Cuban: "We’re the world’s biggest hypocrites when we say: oh, we don’t want you betting on our games and then we get all excited about the sports betting line and people go to Vegas on trips won through the NBA or the NFL. It’s hugely hypocritical." Cuban said of whether he thinks federal regulations will change during his ownership, "Oh yeah. I think over the next three to five years, it’ll change" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 11/23).

Sources confirmed that it is "the first official bid submitted by the Padres" since the ballpark's '04 opening. The "earliest Petco Park could host an All-Star Game" is '17, "in all likelihood." MLB Commissioner Bud Selig is expected to award the '16 and '17 games "before his scheduled retirement in January" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 11/22).

Florida Citrus Sports CEO Steve Hogan said that there have "been some small issues, but nothing that he and his staff didn't anticipate."
