First Lady Speaks At Kids' Day As USTA Ups Security For U.S. Open
First Lady Michelle Obama yesterday "spoke to the thousands of kids" at the 18th annual Arthur Ashe Kids' Day at Arthur Ashe Stadium ahead of this week's U.S. Open. She was there "as part of her Let's Move campaign to fight childhood obesity." Obama "lauded" the USTA's recent initiative that "will install 5,000 new kid-sized tennis courts nationwide and train 15,000 new coaches, trainers and teachers over a three-year period" (NEWSDAY, 8/25).
Meanwhile, the screening process for this week's tournament will feature metal detectors and "include the use of wands" as part of the USTA's "enhanced security" for the event (AP, 8/24).
