Preakness Stakes Sees Fourth-Largest Attendance In Event History
Oxbow won yesterday's Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course before a crowd of 117,203, the "fourth-largest attendance" in the race's history. The total handle for the day was $81,940,233, the sixth-largest in history, while $50,251,542 was "wagered on the Preakness alone." The victory gives trainer D. Wayne Lukas his 14th win in Triple Crown races, "setting a new record." Oxbow is owned by Brad Kelley, who operates Calumet Farm (Baltimore SUN, 5/19). The event "went off without any major trouble," as enhanced security resulted in an "overwhelmingly positive and peaceful day" (Baltimore SUN, 5/19).
