NHL Lockout Underway After No Weekend Negotiations

The NHL’s CBA expired at midnight this morning, and without an official announcement from either side, the league locked out its players. There were no attempts at negotiating yesterday (THE DAILY). The NHL and NHLPA are "likely to communicate, but there are no CBA negotiations expected today at this point" (TWITTER.com, 9/16).

Each side yesterday released a statement, with NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly saying, "We talked with the Union this morning and in light of the fact that they have nothing new to offer, or any substantive response to our last proposal, there would be nothing gained by convening a bargaining session at this time." NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr said he, NHLPA Exec Dir Donald Fehr and "several players on the Negotiating Committee were in the city and prepared to meet. The NHL said that it saw no purpose in having a formal meeting" (THE DAILY).

The league’s official website “went from featuring current players to remembering great moments in the sport, such as the 1987 Canada Cup” (CP, 9/16). NHL teams early this week “are expected to unveil policies to reimburse fans for tickets purchased” (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 9/16). The next “really significant date” will come on Friday when training camps were scheduled to open. (QMI AGENCY, 9/16). Meanwhile, the Blackhawks today announced that the team's annual training camp festival, "which was set for Saturday, is postponed" (SUNTIMES.com, 9/16).
