Sources: Big changes ahead for OWL, Call of Duty

Activision Blizzard will eliminate competitive balance tax and maximum player salary caps for both the Overwatch League and Call of Duty League, sources told SBJ. This is likely due to a recent U.S. Department of Justice antitrust division investigation into whether OWL’s soft cap on salaries violated the 1890 Sherman Antitrust Act because league players are not under the protection or bargaining power of a players union. A competitive balance tax serves as a "soft cap" for player salaries that taxes an organization that goes over a predetermined monetary threshold. Those teams that go over the limit are then taxed with the revenue distributed equally among the rest of the league teams.
