Charlotte Independence debut renovated stadium

The USL Charlotte Independence played their first match at newly renovated American Legion Memorial Stadium last night in front of 4,231 fans in a loss to New York Red Bulls II. Fireworks, a "roaring crowd and the Uptown skyline produced a festive atmosphere." Independence MF Brandt Bronico said, “There is definitely some historic significance.” Manager Mike Jeffries: “It was just awesome to actually be here and be on the sideline.” Mecklenburg County, N.C., began renovating the stadium in '19, "with the intent of the Independence serving as the primary tenant." The $40.5M project has  a 10,500 seating capacity for sporting events and features a synthetic turf field (THECHARLOTTEPOST.com, 7/8).
