Extreme heat forces delay at track & field trials

Officials at the U.S. Olympic track & field trials "suspended competition for more than five hours because of unprecedented extreme heat conditions" in Eugene, Ore. The forecast in "called for extreme heat Sunday," and temperatures on the Hayward Field track "reportedly had reached 108 degrees when the decision to postpone competition was made" around 6:15pm ET. The trials resumed at 11:3pm. Heptathlete Taliyah Brooks "fainted before the javelin throw in her event Sunday afternoon," according to her agent Tony Campbell. By Sunday evening, Brooks was "coherent," but she "later withdrew from the event." Despite the heat wave, officials "previously opted not to move a list of Sunday’s marquee finals from their original afternoon time slots, although three distance events this weekend were moved to earlier times in the morning" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/28).
