Sports Figures On The Ballot: Tuberville Elected U.S. Sen.

Alabama voters "elected first-time candidate" and former college football coach Tommy Tuberville (R) to the U.S. Senate, as he was declared the winner over incumbent Doug Jones at 9:10pm CT last night. With 89% of the expected vote in, "Tuberville had 1,353,905 votes, or 62%, to 827,718 for Jones, or 38%." Tuberville has "generally avoided interviews and announced public appearances where he would face questions" (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 11/4).

Political races throughout the country featured sports figures running for office. Here's how they did on Election Day:

  • Former NFLer and U.S. Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas) "will maintain his seat representing Texas’ 32nd Congressional District with a 52.3% to 45.6% lead over Republican challenger Genevieve Collins with nearly 99% of precincts reporting" (DFW.CBSLOCAL.com, 11/3).
  • U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids (D-Kan.), a former MMA fighter, won a second term, "depending primarily on digital campaigning." The AP "called the race with 18% of precincts reporting as Davids led businesswoman Amanda Adkins by 6%" (K.C. STAR, 11/4).
  • Former NFLer and U.S. Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio) "faced his first reelection campaign to retain his seat" in the House, and he was "declared the winner late in the evening" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 11/4).
  • Former NBAer and U.S. Rep. Al Lawson (D-Fla.) "decisively won reelection," with the AP calling the race at 7:33pm ET (TALLAHASSE DEMOCRAT, 11/4).
  • Former NFLer Burgess Owens is running for the House in Utah as a Republican, but first-term incumbent Ben McAdams (D) holds a "3.5 percentage point lead." It "could be days or weeks until a clear winner emerges" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 11/4).
  • Former MLS player Amir Lowery was running as an Independent for Delegate to the House from DC, challenging long-serving incumbent Eleanor Holmes Norton (D). Results for his race were unavailable at presstime (THE DAILY).
