Report: A-Rod's Group Becomes Favorite To Purchase Mets

Several MLB execs believe that the Alex Rodriguez-Jennifer Lopez group, "which has shown it has the money, is now the clear-cut favorite to purchase" the Mets (TWITTER.com, 8/16). Final bids for the team are due Aug. 31. There were "previously questions about whether the J-Rod group would have enough money to compete with the other bidders," specifically Steve Cohen and the group led by Devils and 76ers co-Owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer. But "J-Rod" added NHL Panthers Owner Vincent Viola and Vitaminwater co-Founder Mike Repole to "boost their funding" (N.Y. POST, 8/17).

WFAN’s Gregg Giannotti said Cohen is a "much better alternative" as a potential Mets owner than Rodriguez' group, and Cohen not being the frontrunner is "totally insane." WFAN’s Boomer Esiason added, “If A-Rod wants to own a baseball team, great. I just don’t want him owning the Mets. ... When you have partners coming out the yin-yang telling you what to do and wanting a return on their money … it never seems to work out” (“Boomer and Gio,” WFAN, 8/17).
