ACC Adopts 11-Game Football Schedule; Notre Dame In The Fold

The ACC is "scrapping its original football schedule due to the coronavirus pandemic, shortening it to 11 games and allowing Notre Dame to compete for the league title for the first time." The previous '20 schedule will be "abandoned and teams will instead play 10 league games plus one nonconference game, which has to be played in the ACC school’s home state." Notre Dame will be "fully welcomed into the fold temporarily," with revenue from its TV deal with NBC "shared with the other 14 ACC schools." Games will begin the week of Sept. 7-12, and the league "will use a single-division format" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 7/30).

Meanwhile, the SEC is "moving closer to an agreement on a conference-only schedule of 10 games," according to sources. During a virtual meeting yesterday, a "majority of athletic directors approved the idea of an SEC-only, 10-game schedule." However, it "must be ratified" by SEC presidents, who are expected to meet virtually today to "seriously discuss the matter." It is "unclear if they will vote then or delay a decision until next week" (SI.com, 7/29).
