NFL Pledges To Donate $250M More For Social Justice Initiatives

The NFL plans to “increase its social justice footprint by pledging to donate $250 million over a 10-year period.” The commitment “extends and expands the initial deal owners struck with the Players Coalition that likely would have surpassed $100 million during its term.” One league official indicated the additional funds owners have approved are intended to “combat systemic racism and support the battle against the ongoing and historic injustices faced by African Americans.” The NFL also will collaborate with players to “determine new paths forward in support of programs to address criminal justice reform, police reform and economic and educational advancement of underprivileged communities” (THEUNDEFEATED.com, 6/11).

UConn AD Set To Present Plan For Major Budget Cuts

UConn AD David Benedict today is expected to "present his plan for cutting down his department’s budget" by $10M, or 25% of the university’s subsidy to the department. It is "widely anticipated that the athletics proposal could include the elimination of some of UConn’s 24 varsity sports." The athletic department spent $80.9M in '19, and received a $42.3M subsidy from the university, the "highest in the nation." UConn’s 24 varsity sports are "eight more than required by the NCAA to maintain Division I status and six more than the average Big East school" (HARTFORD COURANT, 6/12). The HARTFORD COURANT goes with the header, "Cutting UConn Football Isn’t The Prudent Move Or Simple Solution."

The league also will "continue to supply Snapchat with other video programming year-round and develop augmented-reality lenses and filters tied to specific teams and events, including the Super Bowl" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/12).

By Adam Stern

The NBA 2K League this morning is announcing four new partners in Tissot, Jostens, SAP and GameStop, bringing its partner roster to 13. NCAA Committee Approves New CFB Preseason Calendar

The NCAA Football Oversight Committee has approved a “revised preseason calendar” for college football, though it “still needs to be approved by the NCAA Division I Council” next week. The plan would have teams “spending several weeks in late July doing weight training and conditioning before starting a 29-day preseason camp on Aug. 7.” The goal is to “offset the loss of spring football workouts and offseason conditioning that were canceled or drastically modified due to the coronavirus pandemic.” The plan “depends on the continuing impact of the COVID-19 outbreak at the local and state levels” (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/12).

Source: WNBA May Be Nearing Agreement On Return

Members of the executive council of the WNBPA spoke with team representatives last night, which means the league and the player's union "could be near an agreement on the season," according to a source. All players "should soon be informed of the latest proposals from the WNBA regarding the 2020 season, which will then be up for their approval, if they follow the proscribed process." Golden Knights Re-Opening Facilities; Workouts Remain Closed

The Golden Knights plan to reopen City National Arena this afternoon, though all voluntary team workouts “will remain closed to the public because of the NHL’s return-to-play guidelines.” The in-arena restaurant “will reopen for dine in and takeout,” while open skates for people who have pre-registered online “will resume Sunday.” The team store, The Arsenal, “will remain open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day using its side entrance” (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 6/12).

Late Night Hosts Address NASCAR Confederate Flag Ban

Several late night hosts touched on NASCAR's banning of Confederate flags, with NBC’s Seth Meyers saying, “I don't know much about NASCAR, other than the fact that 38% of the drivers seem to be named Rusty, but that's an impressive step to take. I applaud you and if some of your fans boo, maybe you can just drown them out by, I don't know, driving 50 cars 200 miles-per -hour around a track" (“Late Night,” NBC, 6/11). NBC’s Jimmy Fallon: “Hopefully, the gesture will make NASCAR more inclusive. Right now, NASCAR is so white the only merch they sell are New Balance sneakers and SPF 100” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 6/11). CBS’ Stephen Colbert: “NASCAR’s getting more progressive. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. All they do is turn left” (“The Daily Show,” Comedy Central, 6/11).
