Bill Supporting Equal Soccer Pay Introduced In U.S. House

U.S. Reps. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.) and Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) have introduced legislation that would block federal funding for the '26 FIFA World Cup in North America until USWNT players are "paid fair and equitable wages compared" to their male counterparts. The bill is "dubbed the GOALS Act, an acronym for Give Our Athletes Level Salaries." It has the "support of 61 members of the House." It also was "endorsed by the National Organization for Women" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 7/23).

Meanwhile, former USWNT G Hope Solo in a legal motion has claimed that she "should be allowed to participate in an upcoming mediation for the team's pay-discrimination lawsuit against the U.S. Soccer Federation." Solo said that she "feels her former teammates will 'surrender' if she is not included" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/22).
