Breanna Stewart To Be WNBA Ambassador During Injury Rehab
WNBA Seattle Storm G Breanna Stewart "will be a paid ambassador" for the league this season as she recovers from a torn Achilles. Since the league has "no injury list for teams," the Storm "suspended Stewart without pay to free up a roster spot." A source said that the WNBA will pay Stewart in "excess of the roughly $65,000 base salary she would have made with the Storm." The source added that the WNBPA, which was "involved in the Stewart decision ... is interested [in] some kind of change, whether it's in the form of an injured reserve list or a roster expansion." It will "be a big topic of discussion around the CBA" (AP, 5/23). The WNBA's move is "unprecedented in recent history," as Stewart is "believed to be the first active player to serve in such a role" (SEATTLE TIMES, 5/24).
