Late Night Shows Riff On Beginning Of NCAA Tournament

The beginning of the NCAA Tournament was a hot topic on the late shows last night, with ABC's Jimmy Kimmel noting the opening day is "undoubtedly one of the least-productive days in America." Kimmel: "Nothing got done in our office today. ... All work came to an immediate halt. Tonight's show is going to be terrible. You know every year they trot out the statistic about how much money American businesses lose because their employees are watching basketball and it's misleading because it's assuming they would have been working if they weren’t watching basketball. The truth is, we would have been checking Facebook and taking BuzzFeed quizzes” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 3/21).

NBC’s Jimmy Fallon: “March Madness started today, some exciting matchups, some great matchups. Baylor versus Syracuse, Montana versus Michigan, Donald Trump versus Kellyanne Conway's husband. I mean, it's just been madness” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 3/21). NBC’s Seth Meyers: “March Madness began today with top seeds going to Duke, Gonzaga, Virginia and in a stunning abuse of power, Trump University” (“Late Night,” NBC, 3/21).

TBS’ Conan O’Brien said he filled out his own bracket, but also one "for the 64 people running for president." O'Brien: "I have Gonzaga beating Hickenlooper. If you’re doing brackets this year, you have to keep in mind the college admissions scandal because it turns out half of USC’s basketball team has never actually played basketball” (“Conan,” TBS, 3/21).
