Senator's Bill Would Create Panel To Overhaul USOC

U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) has proposed a measure in which a "high-level commission would redesign" the USOC. The bill "would establish a 16-member panel to investigate the USOC and recommend changes." The panel, nominated by congressional leaders and including eight athletes, "would carry subpoena power and have nine months to tell Congress what is needed to fix the troubled organization." It could "determine whether athletes have enough say in the organization, whether the USOC spends its money appropriately and if it has done enough to combat sexual assault" (Colorado Springs GAZETTE, 1/16).

Angels Granted One-Year Lease Extension At Anaheim Ballpark

The Angels late last night were "granted another year in their Angel Stadium lease" as the Anaheim City Council approved a one-year extension by a 5-2 vote. The move assures the Angels of a "home field through the 2020 season." The city and team are "expected to start talks on a new deal soon, with the goal of securing the Angels in Anaheim for decades to come, either in a new or renovated" ballpark. The Angels opted out of their lease last October (L.A. TIMES, 1/16).

PGA Of America Expands AIG Sponsorship Deal

By John Lombardo

The PGA of America is expanding its current deal with AIG, which serves as the official insurance partner of the golf organization. Financial terms of deal were not disclosed, but it includes the official insurance partner category designation for the PGA Championship, KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. This builds on the existing agreement between the PGA of America and AIG division VALIC, currently the exclusive retirement plan provider for the PGA’s Golf Retirement Plus Program. The PGA says the AIG pact is their first official insurance provider deal.

Mississippi PGA Tour Stop Moving Dates For '19 Tourney

The Sanderson Farms Championship is "moving dates in an effort to improve the field and improve its standing among PGA Tour events." The tourney will "move from the third weekend in October" to Sept. 19-22, when Stephen Curry's Bay Area event was initially slated to be held. The move will make it the second event of the ’19-20 season. It also “will no longer coincide" with the WGC-HSBC Champions event in China. The total purse "will grow" from $4.4M to $6.6M and, as with other standalone events, the winner of the '19 tournament will now "automatically qualify for a spot" in The Masters (Jackson CLARION-LEDGER, 1/16).

Meanwhile, PGA Tour Live is now available via subscription on Amazon's Prime Video Channels for customers in the U.S. (PGA Tour).

Latest Bryce Harper Speculation Puts Phillies In Driver's Seat

Speculation on which MLB team will sign free agent RF Bryce Harper is heating up, and sources said that the Phillies have "gained confidence they will land" either Harper or Manny Machado. League sources indicated that the "Phillies’ risk of losing out on both stars is mitigated by the apparent lack of interested teams" and the club’s "financial wherewithal." Around MLB, there is "increasing skepticism about how this can unfold without the Phillies somehow involved" (THEATHLETIC.com, 1/15).

Cubs manager Joe Maddon, when asked if his team could sign Harper, said, "Not going to happen" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 1/16). The N.Y. POST goes with the header, "Yankees, Bryce Harper Need Each Other -- And Would Be Perfect Fit."

Late-Night Shows Tee Off On Trump Serving Clemson Fast Food

The late-night talk shows had a field day with Clemson's visit to the White House and President Trump's decision to feed the CFP champions fast food. CBS’ Stephen Colbert: “At least one good thing has come out of the government shutdown: a giant pile of hamburgers. ... The Mueller investigation is closing in, and the shutdown is tanking Trump's poll numbers. If this pile of burgers is just his way of distracting us, I want to say I'm totally into it. But why stop there? I want to see a monster truck tearing ass through the Rose Garden, the Reflecting Pool filled with ranch dressing or see Trump flip over the Liberty Bell and use it as a giant KFC bucket” (“The Late Show,” CBS, 1/15). CBS’ James Corden: “Trump bought food from McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King and Domino's, or as he calls them, his four most trusted advisors.” Corden: “What a bummer for the Clemson football team. They get invited to the White House to have dinner, only to be served the exact same meal they ate on the journey to the White House” (“The Late Late Show,” CBS, 1/16).

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel said Trump “made history” as the “first U.S. president ever to congratulate himself on placing a fast food order.” Kimmel said Trump tweeted he served “over 1,000 hamburgers but a source inside the White House claims the number of burgers was much lower than that.” Kimmel: “He has to lie about everything. He can't help it. Or maybe he ate the other 700 hamburgers himself” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 1/15). NBC’s Seth Meyers noted Trump tweeted that he paid for the food. Meyers: “Of course you paid! Were you honestly considering asking Clemson to go Dutch?” (“Late Night,” NBC, 1/16).
