Kaepernick's Lawyers Could Seek Subpoenas For Trump, Pence

Colin Kaepernick's legal team is "expected to seek federal subpoenas in the coming weeks to compel testimony" from President Trump, Vice President Pence and "other officials familiar with the president's agenda on protesting NFL players," according to sources. The aim reportedly will be a "dive into the administration’s political involvement with the NFL during Kaepernick’s free agency and the league’s handling of player protests." This comes after "recent disclosures that multiple owners had direct talks with Trump about players kneeling." Sources said that the content of those conversations between Trump and owners is "expected to shape the requests to force the testimony" of Trump and Pence (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 6/7).

Amazon Gets EPL Rights In U.K.-Focused Deal Starting In '19

Amazon has acquired a package of EPL media rights starting in the '19-20 season, and the company said U.K. Prime members "will have exclusive access to watch 20 matches per season, comprising two full fixture rounds ... featuring live coverage of every Premier League team." This adds to Amazon Prime Video's "growing list of live sports, including U.S. Open Tennis, ATP World Tour tennis events and NFL games" (HOLLYWOODREPORTER.com, 6/7). EPL CEO Richard Scudamore "has been seeking to lure a deep-pocketed technology company" to "help continue to drive up earnings from media rights." Amazon has been in "negotiations about the two packages for months -- against rivals including BT -- after the completion of the sale of the most valuable TV rights packages in February" (THEGUARDIAN.com, 6/7).

N.J. Sports Betting Bill Has Ramifications For Team Owners

New Jersey's sports betting bill -- expected to get final governmental approval today -- "could help keep four Atlantic City casinos in the game." The legislation would ban casinos or execs who own pro sports teams from "offering sports betting, theoretically counting out Borgata owner MGM because it also owns" the WNBA Las Vegas Aces. But under a clause in the bill, MGM "would be approved because the team generates" less than 1% of its total annual revenue. 76ers and Devils Owner Josh Harris "would get in under a clause" allowing those who own less than 10% of a casino or gambling company to "participate in sports betting." Harris’ Apollo Global Management "owns a small percentage of Caesars Entertainment, which in turn owns Harrah’s, Caesars and Bally’s." Still "on the bench" would be Rockets Owner Tilman Fertitta's Golden Nugget, which could "offer sports betting as long as Fertitta sold the basketball team within a year" (AP, 6/6).

Meanwhile, Delaware Lottery Dir Vernon Kirk said that $322,135 was "bet on sports at Delaware's three casinos Tuesday, the first day the state offered a full menu of betting options" (ESPN.com, 6/6).

FedEx St. Jude Classic Begins Final Event Under Current Format

The PGA Tour FedEx St. Jude Classic teed off today at TPC Southwind, marking the "beginning of the end for this tournament as Memphis has come to know it." The course in '19 will host the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, reportedly "scheduled to take place July 22-28." That event will feature "only golfers ranked among the top 50 in the world," meaning "most of the PGA pros teeing off at TPC Southwind this year won’t be coming back." But the shift "will be a boon for the Memphis golf scene, and even the most ardent supporters of the tournament’s current format understand the upcoming changes elevate the city’s status in the sporting world" (Memphis COMMERCIAL APPERAL, 6/7).

Adam Silver Addresses Controversy Over White House Visits

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver appeared on pregame coverage of NBA Finals Game 3 last night and addressed both Cavaliers F LeBron James and Warriors G Steph Curry saying neither team would visit the White House. Silver: “I don’t think it should take away from the fact that these players and coaches are speaking out on issues that are important to them and important to society. I encourage them to continue to do that and, on top of that, maybe even more importantly, look at the things they're doing in their communities. We just saw it out in Oakland, we're seeing it here in Cleveland. These players, these teams are actively engaged in their communities, conducting conversations with police officers, with young people of color, and I think that’s the most we could ask for” (“NBA Countdown,” ABC, 6/6).

Fans who were "using the phones as flashlights in the center-field bleachers were asked by security to stop, and play resumed." Red Sox LF Andrew Benintendi said, "I thought is looked kind of cool from center field. But I can see why or how it would be distracting for a hitter" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/7).

Laugh Track: Who Wears Short Shorts

A special edition of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” aired prior to NBA Finals Game 3, with host Jimmy Kimmel taking his fashion cues from Cavaliers F LeBron James by wearing a suit with shorts, similar to the outfit worn by James prior to Game 1. Kimmel: “Every time the Cavaliers lose LeBron’s pants get shorter. By the weekend, he’ll be in Daisy Dukes.” Kimmel said the “Warriors have been unstoppable, they dominated Game 2. It’s almost as if their strategy of having all the best players in the league is paying off.” Warriors G Stephen Curry is the “odds-on favorite to win series MVP, despite the fact that he’s only 11 years old. … But LeBron James is still the most valuable player. I mean the Cavaliers, without him, they're not really even a basketball team. They're just a group of guys who shower together and wear matching outfits.” Kimmel noted the Warriors, according to Las Vegas odds, have the fifth-best chance of signing James in the off-season and “if he goes to Golden State, that's it. No more NBA. LeBron joining the Warriors would be like Thanos joining The Avengers. Don't we have laws about monopolies in this country?”

The pregame broadcast also featured former Basketball HOFer Dikembe Mutombo performing celebrity impressions, with Kimmel saying Mutombo was one of his “favorite NBA players and people” and not “too many people know" about his knack for impressions ("Jimmy Kimmel Live," ABC, 6/6).

TBS’ Conan O’Brien noted President Trump uninvited the Eagles to the White House, doing so when he "found out most of the team wouldn't be coming. ...  Now this is becoming a bit of an embarrassment for the president because there are a lot of athletes out there refusing to visit our controversial commander-in-chief." O'Brien noted the show "put together a list of all the athletes who are still willing to meet with President Trump." They "include the Tampa Bay water polo champions,” the amateur jai alai champion, “Indiana University full-court putt challenge winner Pat Barnes says he'll go, the commissar of three-card monte Mr. Fantain will go, right-time cock fight champ Attila the Hen and of course, Tonya Harding, Lance Armstrong, Pete Rose and Oscar Pistorius, all very happy to go” (“Conan,” TBS, 6/6).
