NFL Owners Meeting: Jones To Critique League's Power Structure

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones today plans to tell his fellow NFL owners at their one-day winter meeting in Irving, Texas, that they need to take back running the league from the league office, and that there needs to be greater transparency for how the HQ operates, according to a source. Jones lost his battle to block the contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell, but he still has his sights set on what he perceives as both high compensation levels at the office and the diminishing roles of owners, the source said. Jones also will make the case the league is getting too involved in politics, whether it is the My Cause, My Cleats campaign or planned social justice partnerships with players (Daniel Kaplan, Staff Writer).

Jones said that the "resolution he put in weeks ago to delay" Goodell's extension is "still in place." Speaking yesterday on his KRLD-FM show, Jones added the resolution is on the agenda for today and that he is "excited about what might transpire" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 12/13). It "looks like" Jones will "take the floor, speak his mind and maybe circumvent -- or at least put on pause -- the new agreement owners have in place with Goodell." A high-ranking league official said, "This is going to get interesting" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 12/13). While Jones is expected to "speak at length" today, it appears that he "will have to settle for talking about the deal he could not stop" (WASHINGTON POST, 12/13).
