Big First Step For Crew Move: Austin Council Discussing Stadium Study

The Austin City Council today will "discuss a resolution to direct staff to begin an analysis of city-owned land for possible relocation" of the Crew. Precourt Sports Ventures President Dave Greeley has "previously stated" that the Crew ownership entity would "seek a piece of land 10 to 15 acres in size for a stadium." Richard Suttle, a lobbyist and lawyer retained by PSV, said that a stadium and training facility, both "privately funded projects," would be "located separately." Greeley said that East Austin locations "would get strong looks for both, pegging the cost of the stadium" in the $150-200M range and the practice facility at $20-40M (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 11/7).

Austin Mayor Pro-Tem Kathie Tovo said, "I am optimistic about the vote. I’ve heard some concerns from my colleagues about location, but the resolution was written to be broad in geographic area. If it passes -- and I expect it will -- this is really just the beginning of the process. But it’s an important first step" (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 11/9).
