MLB Investigating Claims Red Sox Stole Signs With Apple Watch

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said that his office is "running independent investigations" of the Red Sox and Yankees over allegations of sign stealing at Fenway Park last month. This confirms a N.Y. Times report published yesterday afternoon. Manfred said, "This is a charged situation when you have the kind of rivalry that the Yankees and the Red Sox have. I guess it's not shocking that you could have charges and countercharges like this" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/6). The inquiry "began about two weeks ago" after Yankees Senior VP & GM Brian Cashman "filed a detailed complaint with the commissioner’s office that included video the Yankees shot of the Red Sox dugout." The Yankees "contended the video showed a member of the Red Sox training staff looking at his Apple Watch in the dugout" (N.Y. TIMES, 9/6).

The Red Sox could be in "violation of baseball regulations banning the use of certain electronic devices in the dugout." A source said that the probe "includes the unauthorized use of cellular phones" and that the "practice also occurred against other teams." It involves "at least four Red Sox players" (USA TODAY, 9/6).

Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski "laughed throughout a hastily arranged news conference to address the story." He said, "Do I think sign stealing is wrong? No, I don't." He also "suggested the Yankees leaked the story to the Times." Dombrowski: "The Yankees decided they wanted to give it to the (Times) today for whatever reason. I think maybe it just so happened the commissioner was in town today" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/6).

The story made the back-page or front-page covers of all major tabloids in the N.Y. and Boston markets, with the N.Y. Post devoting both its front and back pages to the scandal:
