Puerto Rico Advances To WBC Final Before Crowd Of Nearly 25,000

Puerto Rico last night advanced to the World Baseball Classic final with a "dramatic 4-3 victory in 11 innings over the Netherlands" before a "mostly pro-Puerto Rico crowd" of 24,865 at Dodger Stadium. The game was "decided on the tournament's extra-inning rule" (ESPN.com, 3/21). The crowd "got a brief rise" when Dodgers LF Enrique Hernández "entered the game as a pinch runner" for Puerto Rico in the bottom of the eighth, and a "longer, louder rise" when Dodgers P Kenley Jansen came in for the Netherlands in the ninth (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 3/21).

The U.S. faces Japan tonight at Dodger Stadium in the other semifinal, with the championship game tomorrow night at the ballpark. Rockies and U.S. 3B Nolan Arenado said, "I can't believe I have a 162-game season coming up. I feel like this has been my season with the boys. It's been so much fun" (USA TODAY, 3/21). Light rain is expected leading up to tonight's game, though officials "do not expect any delays" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 3/21).
