Today: Adam Silver has had enough with the resting of NBA stars, while the Shark looks to grow his brand.

NBA's Adam Silver: Resting Starters Is A "Significant Issue"

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in a memo sent to team owners yesterday called the practice of resting star players an "extremely significant issue for our league." He "informed teams that the issue will be a prime topic of discussion" at the next NBA BOG meeting April 6 in N.Y. and "warned of ‎'significant penalties' for teams that don't abide by the league's standing rules." Silver stated that it is "unacceptable for owners to be uninvolved or defer decision-making on this topic to others in their organizations" (ESPN.com, 3/20).

ESPN's Ramona Shelburne noted when Spurs coach Gregg Popovich first "did this, he got fined $200,000." Shelburne: "I don't see Adam Silver fining these teams the way that David Stern fined these teams. There’s really no punishment except bad press" (“OTL,” ESPN, 3/20).

Authentic Brands Group To Manage Greg Norman's Shark Brand

By Abraham Madkour

Greg Norman today will announce a joint venture with Authentic Brands Group (ABG) to own and manage the iconic Shark brand in a deal that the Golf HOFer believes will accelerate growth of his merchandise, licensing and endorsement business. Norman joins an ABG celebrity and entertainment roster that includes Shaquille O’Neal, Julius Erving and the late Muhammad Ali. ABG will work with Norman to grow and develop consumer products and endorsements for the 62-year-old entrepreneur. “I’ve got a 200-year game plan, extending my brand into perpetuity way beyond my passing,” Norman said. Alluding to the recent revamp of the Norman/Shark brand last October, Norman said, "As we repositioned the brand to freshen it up and make it younger looking so we can reach the younger generation, I thought, 'Okay, now the timing might be right for me to see what I can do on a global, joint-venture approach.'"

Not all of the Greg Norman Co. divisions are part of the deal, as Norman will control his operating units, including his golf course design, real estate and investment businesses, as well as Greg Norman Media, Greg Norman’s Australian Grille and Shark Wake Park. Norman: “I’m going to continue to operate those, so this includes my licensing, the Shark logo and the Greg Norman name from the licensing side.”

Under Armour "plans to start selling its shoes" at Designer Shoe Warehouse in July. The brand's "training and running shoes and slides in women's, men's and youth sizes will be sold at all 480 DSW stores." UA North America President Jason LaRose in an email said that the "expansion into 'family channels' such as Kohl's and DSW" is part of the brand's "long-term strategic plan as it pursues growth in the footwear category" (Baltimore SUN, 3/21).

Puerto Rico Advances To WBC Final Before Crowd Of Nearly 25,000

Puerto Rico last night advanced to the World Baseball Classic final with a "dramatic 4-3 victory in 11 innings over the Netherlands" before a "mostly pro-Puerto Rico crowd" of 24,865 at Dodger Stadium. The game was "decided on the tournament's extra-inning rule" (ESPN.com, 3/21). The crowd "got a brief rise" when Dodgers LF Enrique Hernández "entered the game as a pinch runner" for Puerto Rico in the bottom of the eighth, and a "longer, louder rise" when Dodgers P Kenley Jansen came in for the Netherlands in the ninth (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 3/21).

The U.S. faces Japan tonight at Dodger Stadium in the other semifinal, with the championship game tomorrow night at the ballpark. Rockies and U.S. 3B Nolan Arenado said, "I can't believe I have a 162-game season coming up. I feel like this has been my season with the boys. It's been so much fun" (USA TODAY, 3/21). Light rain is expected leading up to tonight's game, though officials "do not expect any delays" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 3/21).

U.S. Women's Team Makes Progress In Talks With USA Hockey

The U.S. women’s national hockey team and its lawyers "met for 10 hours Monday with USA Hockey, working to reach an agreement for increased wages and support." U.S. Fs Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Hilary Knight "called the meetings 'productive' and said the team was hopeful that a deal could be reached quickly enough for the players to prepare for the world championship." The event "begins March 31 in Plymouth, Mich." Lamoureux-Davidson said, "A lot of progress was made today." She was "joined by seven teammates in Philadelphia for the meeting, with an additional 10 players participating remotely" (N.Y. TIMES, 3/21).

SDSU, City Reps Meeting To Discuss Proposed SoccerCity Development

Reps from San Diego State and the city are scheduled to meet today to "discuss the university's issues with the SoccerCity initiative." The meeting is a "significant step toward building a possible coalition between the city, the university and FS Investors, the La Jolla-based group seeking to acquire a 79.9-acre portion of the land for a mixed-use development that would include a stadium for an MLS team and Aztecs football." SDSU AD John David Wicker is expected to attend (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 3/19).

Meanwhile, records show the size of the proposed stadium "would have been adequate" for most SDSU football games over the past seven seasons (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 3/20).

David Ross Performs Cubs-Themed Dance On "DWTS" Debut

ABC last night aired the season debut of “Dancing With The Stars,” which featured newly retired MLBer David Ross and his dance partner Lindsay Arnold performing their dance routine in Cubs uniforms to the song “Go Cubs Go!” Before their dance, Arnold met Ross in the Cubs locker room at Wrigley Field, with Ross noting he would have a had a "victory dance after the World Series, but my teammates carried me off the field." Ross is the first MLB player to appear on “DWTS” and he told Lindsay, “There are some good dancers out there in Major League Baseball.”

Ross and Arnold's dance featured movements imitating a pitcher and batter, with a “DWTS” sign designed to look like Wrigley Field’s marquee. After the judges weighed in on the dance, Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo and P Jake Arrieta skyped in to the broadcast from Spring Training. Rizzo told Ross he “set the bar way too high on your first run.” Arrieta credited him “just for having the balls to get on the show” (“DWTS,” ABC, 3/20).

Bill To Regulate Daily Fantasy Sports Advances In New Jersey

A New Jersey bill to "clarify the legality of fantasy sports games" was released yesterday by the state Assembly Appropriations Committee. The measure would "provide oversight designed to protect consumers" by regulating "large-scale commercial fantasy sports activities." It "does not limit small-scale season long fantasy sports activities conducted amongst family and friends." The bill "would prohibit certain participants, such as individuals under the age of 18 and those with financial interests in the fantasy sports industry" (Bergen RECORD, 3/21).

Jay Bilas Talks Staying Unbiased, Missed Calls In March Madness

ESPN’s Jay Bilas appeared on NBC’s “Late Night” last night and said, "My heart is with having a good game and calling it right down the middle. … If I were rooting for teams, I’d never get through a day. I watch hundreds of games a year, so it’s really not a big deal to me. When I worked with Bill Raftery and Sean McDonough, we always went out with the winners, so we really didn’t care who won. We went out for drinks with the winning coach and the losing coach we just kind of waved to."

Host Seth Meyers said, “This is the first March Madness I’ve ever cared about. I went to Northwestern.” Meyers noted “there was a call that went against Northwestern” in their loss to Gonzaga where the "Gonzaga player, it seems like his hand is going through the net." Bilas: “It doesn’t seem like it, it was.” Meyers: “That’s against the rules?” Bilas: “Against the rules.” Meyers: “Cool, just checking” (“Late Night,” NBC, 3/21).

Quick Hits....

"The demand is there. People want better quality [at venues like ballparks]. The same thing is happening at airports, malls, and movie theaters. They want a more interesting dining experience than just grabbing a hot dog and going to the game" – Chef Todd English, on opening up a signature restaurant at The Battery Atlanta next to the Braves' new SunTrust Park (ATLANTAMAGAZINE.com, 3/20).

"Based on history, we say that the NCAA Tournament gives us 8,500 hotel room-nights. With Kentucky, it’ll be 12,500 room-nights" – Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau President & CEO Kevin Kane, on hosting the South Regional of the NCAA Tournament (Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL, 3/21).

Morning Hot Reads: Owning Up

The Bergen RECORD's Bob Klapisch writes he was one of many skeptics that was "wrong about the World Baseball Classic." The tournament is "turning into a bona fide war of the worlds" and is now a "must-watch." In addition, the U.S.' success has helped "puncture the apathy of superstars." Many of those who chose to stay home likely "will reconsider" in '21.

Laugh Track: We'll Do It Live

Actor Jeff Garlin appeared on TBS’ “Conan” last night, and host Conan O’Brien noted Garlin was “recognized as being a big Cubs” fan because the team asked him to speak before a World Series game. Garlin: “They said, ‘Do you want to do the ‘let’s play ball’ thing?’ And I said, ‘Well, only if I can make a speech.’ And they said 'yes,' which is crazy! The Cubs are handing me a live mic in front of sold-out Wrigley Field.” Garlin noted this was the “first time there was a World Series game in Wrigley Field since 1945, and no one knew how to behave. It was the weirdest vibe in the ballpark.” O’Brien: “You’re a dangerous guy to hand a live mic to in an important situation. What was the thing you were thinking of yelling into the mic that you almost yelled but didn’t?” Garlin: “Boner” (“Conan,” TBS, 3/20).

NBC’s Jimmy Fallon: “Springtime means spring cleaning, and a lot of people are throwing out things they no longer need, like clothing, old books and March Madness brackets. ... South Carolina pulled off a huge upset. … They beat Duke to move on to the Sweet 16. Now, the only question is whether Russia helped. … There were actually several March Madness upsets this weekend, with Wisconsin taking out top overall seed Villanova and Michigan beating Louisville. I haven't seen Wisconsin and Michigan knock out the favorites since the election” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 3/20).

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel said the man “suspected of the theft” of Patriots QB Tom Brady’s Super Bowl LI jersey is the "former director of a Mexican newspaper." Kimmel: "They say he used his media credential to get access to the locker room, and they think he may have also stolen one of Von Miller's helmets from the Super Bowl last year. It’s a fairly serious crime because the jersey is worth about a half a million dollars. The FBI played a major role in recovering it. The morning meetings at the FBI must be very strange right now. ‘Any news on the President conspiring with the Russian government? And where are we on Tom Brady's laundry?’ But they did get it back, so finally something good has happened to Tom Brady” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 3/20).

TBS’ O’Brien said of Sunday's L.A. Marathon, "Actually, there wasn’t supposed to be a marathon. People on the 405 Freeway just gave up and got out of their cars. That's how it started. They got out and started walking" (“Conan,” TBS, 3/20).
