IOC Formally Approves Five Sports For '20 Tokyo Games

The IOC yesterday approved five new sports for the '20 Tokyo Games program: baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing. Skateboarding and sport climbing "could take place in the heart of Tokyo and would not require the construction of permanent stadiums" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/4). Read an in-depth report on the new sports from our Ben Fischer, who is reporting from Rio on the Games (THE DAILY).

Meanwhile, Rio officials yesterday reportedly "lost the keys to Olympic Stadium," leaving organizers "unable to access the mixed area of the venue." Workers "had to come in and use bolt cutters to get into the stadium" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/4).

USWNT G Hope Solo last night "was targeted for abuse by Brazilian fans" as the U.S. "began its quest" for a fourth straight Gold Medal by defeating New Zealand 2-0. Starting in the second half, Solo "was booed by local supporters," with fans "loudly chanting 'Zika' every time she cleared the ball from her penalty area" (USATODAY.com, 8/3).
