Penguins Capture Fourth Stanley Cup With Game 6 Win Over Sharks

The Penguins last night won their fourth Stanley Cup with a 3-1 victory over the Sharks in Game 6 at SAP Center, etching June 12, 2016, "alongside the most celebrated dates in franchise history" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 6/13). The Stanley Cup presentation "will go down as one of the great moments in Pittsburgh sports history." Penguins C Sidney Crosby's "joy was palpable when he took the precious chalice" from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 6/13).

A sample of front-page headlines:

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "Pens Win 4th Cup"
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Pens Win Cup"
San Jose Mercury News: "Sharks Can Only Watch As Pens Lift Cup"
S.F. Chronicle: "Pens Hoist Cup"
ESPN.com landing page: "Crosby's Second Cup Puts Him With Greats"
SI.com: "Penguins Down Sharks For Fourth Stanley Cup"

There were "more than 16,000 fans inside Consol Energy Center" for a Game 6 watch party. The Penguins sold tickets for $10, with proceeds going to the Penguins Foundation (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 6/13). The crowd was "markedly young," and the arena was "pulsing with music, the air horn blasting, the video boards blazing." While the building "wasn't quite full," fans "seemed to be making as much noise as a capacity crowd" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 6/13).

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto last night tweeted that there were "no immediate plans in place" for a celebratory parade. He said that the city and team were "waiting for the team to clinch before discussing anything ... perhaps afraid they might jinx a Penguins championship" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 6/13).

The Sharks last night honored the late Gordie Howe with "his number 9 made up of teal T-shirts in the upper deck." During warmups, "both teams wore honorary decals on their helmets." The Sharks "planned to acknowledge Howe’s passing" during a pregame ceremony." But the organization instead "held a moment of silence for victims of the mass shooting" in Orlando pregame and pushed its Howe tribute to the first intermission (WASHINGTON POST, 6/13).
