Laugh Track: Wage Controls

Last night’s edition of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” featured a segment called “Kicked in the Balls,” which examined the gender wage disparity between the men’s and women’s U.S. national soccer teams. Host Trevor Noah said, “Let's talk about women soccer players. They’re the big stars in the States, with all the money and the glory of the men. Well, except for the money part” (“The Daily Show With Trevor Noah,” Comedy Central, 5/4). See video of the segment.

Actor Wyatt Russell appeared on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and talked about growing up in a family of baseball fanatics, including his father, actor Kurt Russell, who had played in the minor leagues. Russell: “My whole family is baseball crazy, and my cousin played for the Mets and the Braves, my grandfather was a baseball guru, my dad played ball, and I was supposed to be a baseball player. There was a time where I got hit with the ball … got afraid of it and my dad took matters sort of into his own hands. ... He started throwing the ball as hard as he could – and he was (an) ex-professional baseball player – at his 11-year-old son, and brushing me back from the plate. Kids were crying in the outfield, practice was over and I did turn on the ball, which was the lesson. … I turned on it and I hit it and I broke through, and I quit a week later” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 5/4).

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel said of former Republican Presidential candidate Ted Cruz accidentally hitting his wife while trying to hug his father, “It was a jab and then a right hook, an elbow. Next week he’s fighting Ronda Rousey.” The broadcast aired a video of a press conference featuring Warriors F Festus Ezeli and F Draymond Green, in which Green’s face froze for several moments while Ezeli answered a question. Kimmel: “He was totally focused and yet completely distracted all at the same time. You know in Portland, marijuana is legal for recreational use” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 5/4).
